The American Tree Farm System promotes the sustainable management of forests through education and outreach to private family forest landowners. Mississippi is the number one Tree Farm state in the U.S. Tree Farmers manage their forestlands for wood, water, wildlife, and recreation with assistance from forestry volunteers.

Teachers Conservation Workshops are held annually providing educators with in-depth instruction on Mississippi’s forests and forest products, plus classroom tools and resources. Each workshop also offers CEU and university-approved credit hours.

Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education curriculum for schoolchildren co-sponsored by MFA, the Mississippi Forestry Commission, and the USDA Forest Service.

Towering Treasures - Mississippi Museum of Natural Science’s newest exhibit that acts as an extension of the natural forest outside the MS Museum of Natural Science at LeFleur's Bluff State Park, allows visitors to discover that forest trees and ecosystems are shared habitats that support an inter-connected biological community. Guests can explore the different parts of a tree and other elements of the surrounding forest ecosystem while learning about the biological and economical value of trees.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program encourages landowners to manage Mississippi’s forests to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
|

|
County Forestry Associations are sixty-five chapters strong representing seventy-nine counties. These grassroots organizations provide forestry education locally through field days, short courses, and regular meetings where information and technical knowledge is shared among members of the forestry community. Chapters also offer forestry scholarships and forestry educational opportunities for local schools. Contact the MSU Extension Service in each county for membership information.

Public Outreach and Education programs foster a better understanding and appreciation of conservation, development, and use of forest land and resources. MFA serves as the“Voice of Forestry” in Mississippi.
