Forests for Humanity

Forests for Humanity (FFH) is a project that creates cooperation between Habitat For Humanity (HFH) and the Mississippi forestry community to establish a pathway for donations of standing timber or wood products to Mississippi HFH chapters. Through FFH, a forest landowner, public agency or forest industry can donate a portion of standing timber from a timber sale. The timber is transported to a cooperating mill to be manufactured into building products for use in a local HFH project, and the homeowners can plant trees back at the harvest site.
In Mississippi, Forests for Humanity is a cooperating project between the MS Forestry Association, MS Society of American Foresters, and MS Lumber Manufacturers Association (MLMA).  Our opportunity in Mississippi is much greater because our industry is larger and many of our forest industry companies make building materials.  FFH has the potential to be a tremendously successful project in so many ways. Tree farmers and all in the forestry/forest products community are very generous people.  There are thousands of Mississippi families that need housing.
Through FFH the forestry community can contribute to improving housing for people of our state who are in need and also teach the public, especially those living in the urban areas, that trees are a renewable resource.
FFH has been involved in 2 HFH projects, one in Starkville and another in Brookhaven. In the Starkville project, Shuqualak Lumber Company and Packaging Corporation of America donated lumber and Georgia-Pacific Corp, all MFA members, contributed the OSB for sheathing.
The second FFH house in Brookhaven, MS is currently under construction. The framing was completed in late March. Clint Rounsaville, MLMA President, is working with the local Habitat group to complete the house. Clint’s company, Franklin Timber Company in Bude and Columbus Lumber Company in Brookhaven, both MFA members, generously donated the lumber to build the house.

How can a landowner and CFA participate?

Contact MFA’s FFH Task Force and express your interest to donate timber through the program. Donations will be coordinated through the Task Force.  Contacts will be made with the appropriate HFH chapter and we’ll start planning your CFA FFH project.  If you have questions or want to get involved contact Marc Measells at (662)325-3550.
