Mississippi Continuing Education for Professional Loggers Program
Mississippi's Logger Education Program developed as a unique partnership between the public and private sectors. Active groups include the Mississippi Loggers Association, the Mississippi Forestry Association, American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) member companies, and the Mississippi State University Extension Service.
The Mississippi Logger Education Council (MLEC) drafted a proposed curriculum to meet the needs of the Mississippi logging community as well as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) goals of AF&PA member companies in 1996. The State Implementation Committee (SIC), which is responsible for SFI compliance within Mississippi, accepted this curriculum. Mississippi State University’s Extension Service agreed to coordinate the training of loggers, with the cooperation of MLEC and the participating forest products companies.
The Mississippi Continuing Education for Professional Loggers Program provides useful and timely information to support the advancement and professionalism of Mississippi’s loggers, while augmenting educational programs for others involved in the wood supply system. Completion of the basic curriculum illustrates the good faith effort of Mississippi’s logging contractors to adhere to the SFI principles set forth by the AF&PA and its member companies. The program is also used as a framework to assist loggers in meeting SFI logger education requirements of the AF&PA member companies and licensees.
Loggers must first attend the four basic workshop modules. After the four basic classes are completed, each logger is required to earn 12 Continuing Education for Professional Loggers (CEPL) hours every two years.
Basic Curriculum - Four Basic Workshop Modules
An Introduction to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative – outlines the SFI program developed by the AF&PA.
Best Management Practices – provides an overview of Mississippi’s efforts to address non-point source pollution resulting from forestry practices.
Harvesting and Transportation Safety – provides information on Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines for logging.
Business Management for Professional Loggers – outlines several different strategies that a logging business can implement to make the business more efficient, profitable, and legal.
Loggers and others needing to document education activities must complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain their “trained” status. There are two categories of education credits. Six hours must be earned in Category I activities while the remainder may be earned in Category II. Log a Load for Kids is a national giving program which brings the dedication and generosity of the nation's loggers and other forestry industry personnel in conjunction with forestry organizations and associations to raise money for local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
Mississippi Forestry Association partners with the Mississippi Loggers Association (MLA) in the Log A Load for Kids program. MLA coordinates support and fundraisers to benefit Log A Load for Kids in Mississippi and the Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, MS.
