Marshall County Forestry Association Wins Award

October 22, 2008

Marshall County Forestry Association (CFA) received the 2008 Outstanding County Forestry Association Award presented in Choctaw by the Mississippi Forestry Association. The award was given at the county forestry association luncheon as part of Mississippi Forestry Association’s Annual Meeting, where they celebrated their 70th anniversary. Over 600 guests attended the Annual Meeting.

Led by President George Murphree, Marshall CFA was especially proactive this year in working with the county supervisors concerning timber harvesting issues that affected the county roads. Known for its active membership and assertiveness in promoting good forest management and reforestation, Marshall County Forestry Association was honored for making impressive strides in the local community. The Marshall CFA recruited 19 new members this year, bringing their total membership to 186. They held a Fall Field Day, a youth forestry field day, two quarterly meetings and an annual meeting where they had more than 100 in attendance and raised more than $15,000 for the Catch-A-Dream program. The Marshall CFA also hosted a child from the Catch-A-Dream program for a day of outdoor activities. Thirty-five times news items from their CFA appeared in the newspaper or other publications. Extensive effort by many CFA volunteers goes in to planning and executing education programs, field days, scholarship fund raising and a multitude of other activities.

The Marshall CFA is a local chapter of Mississippi Forestry Association (MFA). Mississippi Forestry Association’s vision is to serve as The Voice of Forestry in Mississippi. In 1938 MFA was formed to guard and grow Mississippi’s forests and that is still the mission today. MFA is the only organization that represents every group in the forestry community. MFA leads the efforts in protecting landowner rights, improving the forest products economy and educating the community about the ecological benefits of healthy, renewable forests and of the forest industry. MFA is a private (non government), nonprofit association. To learn more, visit www.msforestry.net.
